President Thabo Mbeki will pay a historic visit to the New York Stock Exchange

President Thabo Mbeki will on Wednesday 26 September 2007 pay a historic visit to the New York Stock Exchange where he is expected to ring the bell as part of the tradition in the Stock Exchange to mark the closing of the day’s trading activities.

“The visit to the Stock Exchange is a historic occasion since it will be the first time in the history of the NYSE that a President of South Africa has ever rung a bell” says a statement from the New York stock Exchange

President Mbeki was invited to the New York Stock Exchange by its CEO Mr. John Thain as an expression of confidence in the South African economy. In this regard, a number of South African companies including Telkom, Sappi, Sasol, Anglo-Gold Ashanti, Goldfields, Harmony Gold Mining are listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
