As beautiful as it is, the Western Cape is a water-scarce part of the world (much like other successful tourist regions like Southern California and Western Australia) and is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and susceptible to periodic droughts. At present the Western Cape is experiencing a significant drought. Traditionally we experience most of our rain during the winter period, starting May and continuing to August. However, rain can be experienced anytime of the year.

Cape Town and the Western Cape are open for business in spite of the current drought. Visitors and delegates will arrive in a place with a significant breadth and depth of experiences, and exceptional beauty….

WASHINGTON D.C. – South Africa’s Ambassador to the USA, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, together with the First Minister of Wales, Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones AM, today officially announced a rugby match between their national teams at Washington’s RFK Stadium on 2 June.
During the announcement, Ambassador Mahlangu highlighted that the Government of South Africa will be celebrating the life of our country’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela during this year, the year in which he would have celebrated his 100th birthday. He said, “Madiba was a firm believer in the power of sports to be a unifying force and the ability it has to change lives. South Africa has experienced the unifying power of sports when President Mandela handed over the Webb Ellis trophy to the Springbok captain in 1995. The Springbok rugby team played a vital part in forging the Rainbow Nation and bringing pride and joy to every citizen.”
First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones noted, “It is fantastic to be here with the South African Ambassador to the US, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, to announce this exciting fixture between our two great countries. Wales and the Springboks have a huge global fan base and I am confident this clash of titans at Washington’s world famous RFK Stadium will help raise the profile of rugby in America. I, for one, can’t wait until June 2.”

Wales vs South Africa will take place on 2 June 2018 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. Tickets for the match, which is being promoted by USA Rugby’s commercial arm, Rugby International Marketing (RIM), will go on sale beginning Tuesday, March 13. Tickets will first be available via the Official Citi Pre-sale on March 6th with general tickets going on sale to the public, March 13th.

Members of the media, I welcome all of you to our first briefing in the New Year. I trust you had a refreshing rest. We have convened this media briefing because we are deeply concerned about false reports on the lifespan of the green-barcoded ID books.

These reports, which first appeared towards the end of 2017, masquerade as a notice from the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), and claim that 31 March 2018 is the termination date for using the old green-barcoded ID books. This had an effect of driving citizens, in great numbers, to Home Affairs offices to apply for smart ID cards in panic.

At the time, we had responded swiftly to say such reports are false, and do not come from us. We are again confronted with the same incorrect reports, from the beginning of January 2018, circulating largely on social media.

We therefore call upon members of the public to ignore these mischievous messages. Responding with panic affects our systems negatively, thus making it very difficult for us to deliver services as expected, professionally and in the most humane of ways. Among others, our offices in the KwaZulu-Natal Province can barely cope with the numbers. As you will indeed understand, these false messages are putting our offices under extreme pressure, unduly, as people rush there in their numbers to get smart ID cards……

Water Situation in Cape Town, South Africa

Washington D.C.: Whilst the City of Cape Town and surrounding areas in South Africa are experiencing water shortages, authorities are implementing a variety of measures (in the short, medium and long term) to address the situation.

In spite of water usage restrictions having been imposed by local authorities on industrial as well as domestic usage, this is having a minimal impact on tourists’ experience of the affected areas. No effort is being spared in a move to avert the taps running dry.

Tourists are encouraged to proceed with their plans to visit South Africa, including the affected areas. South Africa remains an attractive, value-for-money destination and all tourist related industries have put measures in place to avoid inconveniencing visitors.
