Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) 

Administration

Purpose: The purpose of the Administration Division within the Embassy is to support the Ambassador, all line function officers and other levels of staff with financial and logistical services, in order for them to carry out their responsibilities effectively, efficiently and in the most economical way which are consistent with the Public Finance Management Act and the Treasury Regulations. The following services are available within Administration: Accounts Section Procurement of goods/services Messenger and driver/chauffeur services Management of properties State department liaison services General Administration. The Administration Division is also responsible for rendering consular services to South African citizens in distress who are traveling abroad and other consular services to clients from the United States of America.

Agriculture 

Purpose: The Office of the Department of Agriculture at the Embassy of South Africa in the United States serves to represent South Africa’s interest in agriculture.  The Office serves as hub for agricultural representation in the United States of America, Canada, Mexico and Cuba it also looks at South African agricultural interest in the rest of the Americas.  It provides the strength and determination to consolidate the partnership for poverty eradication, accelerated growth and wealth creation.

Consular

Purpose:  Responsible for the rendering of consular services to South African citizens in distress when traveling abroad and to render other consular services to clients from the United States of America.

Defence

Purpose: The Defence Office of the South African Embassy represents the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in the USA and is responsible for retaining a sound relationship with the US Military and coordinating activities on a day-to-day basis between the SANDF and the US Military. The SA-US Bilateral Cooperation Forum (BCF) includes as one of its ten committees the SA-US defence Committee  (DEFCOM), which was established on 29 July 1997. The SA-US DEFCOM is one of the more active committees and is used as a means to facilitate cooperation on defence issues.

Economic and Commercial Affairs

Purpose: As the representative office for South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry, the economic and commercial affairs office is responsible inter alia for:

• Coordinating South Africa and the United States’ (US) economic relations through participating in inter-governmental processes and platforms.
• Implementing South Africa’s trade policy, with particular focus on developments in the WTO, encouraging South-South co-operation, North-South co-operation and economic growth and development in Africa.
• Facilitating access for South African goods and services into the US market through ensuring optimal utilization, by South African exporters, of existing preferential trade mechanisms, as well as contributing the South African perspective to the policy review processes of those mechanisms.
• Facilitating collaboration between South African and US industry, with special focus on the sectors espoused by South Africa’s Accelerated Shared Growth Initiative (ASGISA) and National Industrial Policy Framework.
• Marketing South Africa as a prime destination for US foreign direct investment as well as providing information on South Africa’s business climate and the regulatory framework.
• Assisting US companies to source South African suppliers and products and find potential investment partners.

The economic and commercial affairs office has other representation in the Chicago and New York Consulates-General.
