The Hospitality and Information ServicesThe Embassy of South Africa hosted an informational reception Wednesday, 30 October 2002 for The Hospitality and Information Services (THIS) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in the Ambassador's Residence.
The AAUW was established in the late 19th Century and assists with providing better educational opportunities and scholarships for women. THIS is a volunteer organization that was established in 1961 by the Chief of Protocol at the Department of State and aims to introduce the diplomatic corps and their families to Washington, DC and American culture. The organization consists of over 300 volunteers and offers programs, such as art, cooking, tours, nature activities, as well as special interest groups. One of these special interest groups is an English conversation group, which provides conversation opportunities for the families of diplomats who wish to improve their English skills. It is this special interest group, and more specifically, Anna Mkhize, wife of Dr. Siphiwe Mkhize, Minister of Agriculture at the Embassy, who organized the reception.
Dr. Mkhize provided the group with general information about South Africa, it's people, cultures, politics, economy, and agricultural sector. In addition, the enthusiastic group of women also sampled some South African food and wine.
