OPEN DAY HOSTED BY THE EMBASSY OF SOUTH AFRICA, WASHINGTON, DC
DATE / TIME: MONDAY, 18 JULY 2022, 10:00 – 15:00
Fellow compatriots
Sanibonani / Dumelang / Goeie Dag / Molo / Thobela
The Nelson Mandela International Day campaign remains rooted in the call Nelson Mandela made in 2009 to honor the struggle icon by working in communities rather than by celebrating his birthday. While the 18 July remains a focal point for the campaign, we urge people supporting the campaign to participate in sustainable interventions with lasting impact.
18 July, the birthday of Nelson Mandela is declared “Nelson Mandela Day” by the United Nations. The call by the UN to organizations and communities across the globe is to volunteer 67 minutes of their time to serve in a project that builds a better life for all. The 67 minutes symbolize the 67 years that Nelson Mandela contributed towards the project of building a better life for all in South Africa, Africa, and the World.
The global theme for 2022 is “Do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are”. The context, of course, is a world in which inequality continues to grow and in which the destructive impact of the COVID19 pandemic has exposed existing disparities and damaged vulnerable communities in all kinds of ways. The call to action is as broad and as inclusive as possible – identify those in need around you and do what you can to make a difference for them.
In marking International Nelson Mandela Day and dedicated to remembering the extraordinary life and legacy of Mandela, you are cordially invited by Ambassador Mfeketo and her team to an OPEN DAY walkthrough at your home away from home, the Embassy of South Africa in Washington, DC.
In the spirit of Madiba and his vision to spread social justice and freedom for all, this is your chance to become part of a continuous global movement for good, members of the public are encouraged to bring along any non-perishable foodstuffs, old clothes, and toys, that will be donated to an Orphanage in the DMV area.
Looking forward to meeting with you!
